Parenting Adolescents
The joys and challenges of parenting reach a whole new level when your AD/HD child becomes a teenager!
Your adolescent's main focus is continuing his/her development as his/her own person – separate and independent from you. When parenting a strong-willed adolescent with AD/HD, everything in parenting can become even more challenging!
Your AD/HD Parenting Coach will help you:
- Understand the special challenges your AD/HD adolescent faces in social situations and relationships, driving, peer pressures, etc.
- Solidify your teen's foundation for adulthood
- Support yours and your child's "dance" between independence and controlled boundaries
- Develop your adolescent's life skills for living away from home
- Emphasize and support academic success geared toward college or other career training
- Focus closely on working with school administrators to identify learning needs to promote success in high school and college through special accommodations and educational opportunities
- Work with appropriate professionals to re-evaluate your young AD/HD adult's emotional, physical, and educational needs
- Avoid the ease of "dropping the ball" and giving up on parenting
- Develop family-agreed boundaries for dating and strong relationships outside of family
- Focus on the strengths of your child
- Create an environment that supports success WITH your teen
- Development of boundaries, including rewards or consequences around those boundaries
- Prepare for the transition of your young adult leaving "the nest"
Adolescence is an exciting, scary and challenging time for parents and adolescents – we can help you and your AD/HD adolescent navigate this important time in your and his/her life!
Working with an AD/HD Parenting Coach will lighten the burden of parenting and move you to a different level of parenting that will promote the success of both you and your child.
